Seminar:   Obesity in Children

Representatives from our affiliated societies and our policy committees attended this seminar at Danbury Street on 15 July 2004.

Dr Hilary Close, NCW Science and Technology Committee and a member of the Advisory Committee on Novel Foods and Processes spoke about the scientific aspects of obesity and included an account of the work of the Food Standards Agency and the Advisory Committee on Novel Foods and Processes.

One worrying fact which we learnt was that since 1991 obesity in England among six year olds has doubled to 8.5 per cent, and for 15 year olds has trebled to 15 per cent.

Stephanie Valentine, Institute of Consumer Sciences explained that she was employed by the British

Nutrition Foundation. Since 1991 the BNF /MAFF 'Food as a Fact of Life' food and nutrition programme has provided a comprehensive framework for UK schools. It would be good if every primary teacher were to use these guidelines for healthy eating.

Valerie Bishop, Chair of the Media Policy Committee, outlined NCW work concerning advertising aimed at children. At Conference 2000 NCW had passed a resolution on this subject. She pointed out that recent research has shown that obese children are more receptive to food advertisements than others.

The theme of the question and answer session was 'How can children be taught what is healthy?' Some suggestions were: less snacking, a better diet with a reduction in soft drink consumption, more family eating together, a less sedentary life-style coupled with more sport at school.

The lunch-time seminars between NCW members and our Affiliates provide a good opportunity for friendship and exchange of views.

A full report of the seminar is obtainable from the Administrative Office, price £1.50
