NCW AFFILIATES'
MEETING
VULNERABLE WOMEN
At the NCW Policy Centre, Danbury Street, 11 July 2007
This was an interactive meeting with participants debating
this challenging
and complex social issue.
The lead speaker was Josephine Wakeling of the
National Christian Alliance
on Prostitution, founded in 1995, which supports and
empowers groups
throughout the UK, working with people involved in the sex
industry,
and aiming to offer freedom and change to vulnerable
women. Many girls
are barely into their teens before they are caught up in
or exploited by
prostitution. They are de-humanised: drug addiction and
being on the
receiving end of violence make it difficult for a woman to
break free
from prostitution. Short term and long term support
systems are
essential. However the percentage of women who succeed in
making
the new start they long for is depressingly small.
