          Why farming matters

Food Security, Land Use and the Crisis in
Beef and Lamb Farming
  - an update

Following the November 2007 launch of its campaign by NCW Affiliate, the National Farmers Union, NCW Regions have been busy circulating leaflets and pressure cards (to give to local supermarkets) in order to raise awareness of the issues involved and through our questionnaire to local farmers, retailers and consumers, obtain facts for a report to send to Government.

The East Midland Region has held coffee morning discussion groups on the questionnaire.  The Northern Region is also having  a seminar, including a beef and lamb lunch at a venue just off the A66 east of Darlington on 19 April.  Speakers include Ionwen Lewis, President of NCW Affiliate the Women’s Food and Farming Union.  The South West and Midland Region have had an inspirational talk from Julia Evans, the Chair of the Herefordshire  branch of the National Farmers Union.

Hereford Branch has been distributing questionnaires to local farmers and butchers and talking to farmers and consumers in the local Market.

The NFU continues the initiative with eight Regional road shows with trailers visiting town centres, publicising British lamb and beef.  As partners NCW will be supporting our Affiliate, the NFU; NCW members will have the opportunity to help distribute leaflets and display our banner alongside the trailer.

On 17 March a meeting has been arranged in London with Sainsbury’s buyers and a NCW team (Sylvia Owen, Patience Purdy, Sheila Eaton, Gwenda Nicholas) together with representatives of the Townswomen’s Guild and Affiliate the Women’s Food and Farming Union, to discuss where they source food.
