             Why farming matters

The horticultural industry

The National Council of Women believes Britain must grow more of its own food - and certainly not decrease production.

There is a world shortage of food, that will only get worse with climate change, and the economic development of  other countries such as India and China is forcing an almost daily increase in prices.  Britain cannot rely on its financial ability to buy food in an expensive foreign market: we need to buy fresh locally produced food, at the same time reducing the carbon footprint.

It is also important not to lose the farming industry, it's skills and way of life, with the disastrous effect that this would have on the economy, the countryside, and the environment.

NCW therefore supports the National Farmers Union Campaign to raise awareness with consumers and the Government of the problems facing the horticultural industry.
