Darlington Borough
Council has given the name 'Local Motion' to
its scheme for tackling congestion in the town.
('Locomotion' was the name of the engine, pictured
above, which pulled the first train at the
Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825.)
A conference on
2 April 2008, organised by the Darlington
Borough Council in partnership with NCW, was
centred round Darlington’s efforts at
sustainability; relating this Local Motion
initiative to the benefits to health and the
environment of a reduced dependency on cars.
There were several workshops, including two on ‘Marketing Health
and the Environment’ and ‘Eco-foot printing’.
Margaret Field, Chair of
the NCW Transport Policy Committee, was the final
speaker in the morning session, and spoke on 'the National
Council of Women – its transport concerns'.
