President's Report for 2007

2007 has been a time of work and progress for NCWGB. We have
continued to deliver a wide range of timely and pertinent conferences
and seminars and to pursue our Resolutions and policies in spirited
correspondence with relevant bodies. The volume of written evidence
sent to government can be gauged from the list of ‘Replies to
Government papers’ listed in the Directors’ report by your
Vice-President (Policy). The range of seminars organised is
astonishing in its diversity.
At the same time, we have been advancing our aim to represent all women
by seeking to share our vision and aims with women of all ethnicities
and with young women and girls in our society. Thanks to our
Vice-President (Affiliates), Barbara Maddison, and to our connection
with the European Centre of the International Council of Women (ECICW),
we are now working with sixth-form girls; we have been meeting with
women from a wide range of communities in the Birmingham area and have
been glad to welcome new Members and Affiliates as a result.
Your Vice-President (Membership) has been active in enhancing the image
of NCW through the introduction of improved publicity and visual aids
materials now evident at our seminars and conferences. The
reorganisation of our Policy Committees and policy-making procedures is
currently being debated by our Members. The outcome of this
consultation will be implemented in 2008.
At the same time, our Treasurer and her team have kept our finances in
good shape, ensuring that we have the means to effect the reshaping of
our organisation to meet the changing needs of women in modern times.
Our Funding Sub-committee has carried out painstaking research,
preparatory to seeking funds to support the projects being developed.
Nationally and internationally NCW has been represented at conferences,
seminars and meetings, voicing and pursuing the policies agreed by
Members. We were particularly gratified when our representative, Grace
Wedekind was elected president of ECICW last May and we look forward to
hosting the ECICW Conference in the UK next spring.
Aside from our national and international presence, the work of our
branches goes quietly on. Meetings, debates, discussions, surveys,
visiting speakers, and social occasions all serving to fulfil our
designation as an 'educational charity'
̶
educating ourselves whilst serving our community.
In short a very full year in which work, change and development have
each played their part. My thanks to all of you, Members and Officers,
wherever you serve, for all you have done to further the aims of NCW in
2007.
