Triennial General Assembly, 
Kiev, Ukraine,  September 2006

 

The ICW Triennial General Assembly was held at Kiev in the Ukraine on  6-10 September 2006.

The Triennial Conference is the most important in the calendar of the International Council of Women. It was attended in2006 by five members of NCWGB - the President  Amy Gibbs, President-elect Monica Hall, Vice-President Wendy Richardson, Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Lois Hainsworth MBE, and Grace Wedekind, ICW Adviser on the Status of Women. 

Delegates from sixty countries attended, and the NCWGB delegation seized the opportunity for informal networking with national councils from all over the world.

An opening reception, concert and buffet supper took place on 5 September in the City Hall by invitation of the Mayor of Kiev, in the presence of Ambassadors.  Madame Yuschenko (wife of the President of the Ukraine) spoke at the ICW Gala Dinner. Other receptions were given by the Prime Minister of the Ukraine and the Minister for Youth and Families. The NCWGB delegation, with some guests, was also received by the British Embassy.

 

The formal opening on 6 September included speeches by senior government ministers.  Anamah Tan, ICW President, gave a lively address and a full agenda included two seminars on gender equality organised by the Ukrainian Council - one concentrating on the needs of younger women.  NCWGB played a full role throughout the meeting. Amy Gibbs presented the NCWGB three-year report and the NCWGB resolution on natural disasters.  Grace Wedekind presented the ICW Status of Women International Report, and the Status of Women resolution on the role of men and boys in work towards equality of women and men.  Grace also chaired an ICW Working Group on trafficking in women and girls.

Other ICW resolutions agreed included Education on a Sustainable Environment; Global Climate Change; Dialogue and Tolerance in Conflict Resolution; Preparation for Partnership in Marriage; and the Provision of Food and Drinking water for the Elderly in Poverty, Isolation and Conflict Situations.

Lois Hainsworth, who organised the Interfaith Service at the Triennial, was appointed to the Committee of Honour to mark her contribution to the work of the International Council of Women over many years.
