Transport issues of current concern are:

 •   the quality of public transport
 •   the personal safety of women travellers
 •   novice drivers
 •   traffic congestion and pollution
 •   long-term local plans which could reduce
        the need for car journeys
 •   progress with Crossrail

The next meeting of the Transport Committee in November 2008 will be a joint meeting with the Media Committee with a speaker from the journal Local Transport Today.

locomotionLocomotion at Darlington
In April 2008 NCW members from Darlington Branch and the NCW Transport Committee took part in the Borough Council's 'local-motion' conference at Darlington on progress made in encouraging townspeople to make smarter travel choices by opting for using walking, cycling or buses instead of the car.

Responses have been submitted to the following consultation documents in 2008:

 •   The revision of guidance on writing Disabled Persons’
Protection Policies and a Code of Practice on train
and station design for disabled passengers
 •   Learning to drive (for the Driving Standards Authority)

If you have any evidence of social exclusion arising from poor transport facilities, please contact us.
