John Grundy at Darlington and District Lunch!

John Grundy, the architectural historian and broadcaster specialising in the North East was the speaker at the Darlington and District Annual Spring Lunch recently, attended by the National President of NCW and the Deputy Mayor of Darlington. John co-wrote/ edited the Northumberland volume of the new edition of Nicolaus Pevsner, The Buildings of England and regaled members with hilarious tales of the weird reputation of people in the north. Perhaps our seminar in May, ' Rebranding a Region though the Arts, The North East Experience' will dispel these myths!

THE V0ICE OF THE LISTENER AND VIEWER CONFERENCE.

Making the Most of the New Media - Literacy for the over 50s.

In spite of the G20 disruptions our Affiliate, the Voice of the Listener and Viewer (VLV), with support from Ofcom and BT, held a very successful Media Literacy Conference at the New Connaught Rooms in London: specifically designed to address ’how the over 50s can get to grips with digital broadcasting and the new media.’ A range of first class speakers from various sections of the media industry, adult learning and independent research produced an interesting and informative day.

In his opening remarks Richard Lindley, Chairmen of VLV, said the way in which we communicate was changing rapidly and many people over fifty could be excluded and experience that ’left out of the group feeling’. New communication skills were needed so that older people are not left on the wrong side of the divide. Television will be broadband in three years time and have many advantages. Other speakers mentioned the social advantages for older people: they can communicate more with children and grandchildren, keep in touch with friends, do their shopping and banking online, have a voice and take part in discussions/ campaigns. Much of UK online is free and there are huge benefits to access information.

Technology skills are as important as the 3Rs; older people were left out and need to become computer literate. These are life tasks/skills: 90% of new jobs require IT skills, new skills give confidence and motivation. The Internet services to Television with the BBC could make things easier for older people and this is the responsibility of the BBC. What are the barriers: fear, unreliable technology, cost, not enough support? If the government want us to use the new technology, they should provide free training courses. Various organisations will be holding free computer courses around the country - check out your area.

Television presenter Martyn Lewis guided the audience through a demonstration of voice activated systems and a live overseas computer video link up with friends by celebrities concluded the conference.

ICW Conference in South Africa

The 2009 Triennial Conference of the International Council of Women will take place in South Africa in October 2009 at a very pleasant resort outside Johannesburg. Attendance is open to all members of NCW and of our affiliated organisations. Previous Triennial meetings have been held in Kiev (2006), Australia (2003) and Finland (2000), when there was good attendance by representatives of NCW, who greatly enjoyed these occasions.

The 2009 Conference will open on 12 October with a Seminar, taking up the theme of the recent meeting of the UN Commission on the Status of Women on “Women and Care”. This will be followed on 13 October with a meeting of the European members of ICW, known as ECICW, to which all members are again invited.

The Conference will officially open on 14 October and will run until 19 October. A number of short tours and visits are being arranged to follow the Conference and details will be available very soon. We already know, for example, that the Dutch National Council of Women will arrange a visit to Namibia, to which we are invited.

Members interested in further details of the visit to South Africa should send their names to Grace Wedekind at the NCW office address in Darlington. This Conference may also appeal to members with family or friends in South Africa, who could combine a visit to them with attendance at the ICW meeting, which is always a fascinating opportunity to meet women with shared interests from all corners of the world.
