Sixth form initiatives

Everyday thousands of baby girls are born into the experience we call “life’s journey”. For most there will be the usual ups and downs, successes and failures, good times and bad. Opportunities will be taken, and in many cases taken gladly. Obstacles will be surmounted and hurdles jumped. For a significant minority, however, from the moment they take their first breaths, they will be in hell.

On March 12th 2008, Nottingham and Notts. Branch held the first ever inter-generational seminar, 'It’s a Girl'. The 74 delegates were made up of 37 NCW members and Affiliates and 37 Sixth formers.

Lucie Russell of Smart Justice demonstrated clearly a baby’s journey to gaol; whilst earlier in the day, NCW President, Monica Hall, linked the same focus to her recent visit to the United Nations and a meeting she had had, as part of Six-O, with Harriet Harman. Sitting in mixed age groups the audience discussed the effect on her children if a woman is in prison.  They also quickly answered the crucial question, “Why aren’t you in prison”?

Lois Hainsworth MBE’s talk, “Not for Sale”, showed how some girls are little more than commodities from the moment that they are born. Thus NCW members and students were stimulated to think more deeply about the tragedy that is the life experience of many girls.

NCW Annual Conference 2008

The theme of the conference will be 'Growing up in Britain'   It will take place at the Holiday Inn, Maidenhead on Friday 17th, Saturday 18th, and Sunday 19th October. The hotel has recently been refurbished with beautiful rooms, lounge, restaurant, and a lovely swimming pool as well as very friendly staff.

Friday will be a relaxing time with an optional visit to a local historic house, Taplow House and in the evening a buffet meal and a speaker from Windsor, Barbara Hunt.

‘Growing up in Britain is this year’s theme.   Most of us have grown up in Britain but what is it like for youngsters today?   We will hear speakers on Saturday afternoon to talk about this.

Saturday and Sunday will consist of  NCW business, resolutions, reaffirmations, seminar reports, a Conference dinner, (at which  Peter Dorling will speak on Working at the BBC), Region and Branch Meetings (including Affiliates) and the AGM.   Proposals for conference resolutions should be sent to the Admin Office.

NCW and the treatment of macular degeneration

The National Institute for Clinical Excellence had decided that the two drugs for the treatment of macular degeneration would not be provided until the patient had lost the sight of one eye; but this has now been changed to when the disease has been diagnosed in the first eye.   NCW has been the only women’s organisation to protest at the first decision and we should be encouraged by this change in policy.

A viable British farming industry

The NCW  National Council of Women bridges the gap between the consumer and the decision makers and supports the campaign launched in 2007 for a viable farming industry in the British countryside, providing food security and locally produced food.

The Northern Region are holding a seminar on farming at Sadberge near Darlington on Friday, 16 May, at which a beef and lamb lunch will be served.          [MORE]
