‘Housing – the
Future’ was the title of a seminar held on 21 May
2007 at Eland House. Speakers were Steven Daniels on the new
home information packs (HIPs), Oliver Hartwich on ‘better
homes – greener cities’, and Sarah Wrigglesworth, whose
sustainable house appeared on ‘Grand Designs’, Mike Smart on
the IKEA ‘flat pack’ housing development in Gateshead, and
Sue Eely on some solutions for rural housing.

We were pleased to note that the ‘Boklok’
(or IKEA houses) are being built in Gateshead and a young
professional women is first on the list. A report on the
houses will follow when Eleanor Jellett and Wendy Richardson
have been to see them.
UPDATE – Steven Daniels had to cope with
the fact that the day after he had given NCW members his
talk on HIPs, they were axed (temporarily); but HIPs are
very much part of house selling now: the Committee is
obtaining samples of the packs so that we can be more
informed about the new way to sell a 3-bedroom or 4-bedroom
house.

The meeting on 5
November concentrated on the
future of sustainable and affordable
housing, with an
excellent talk and a very patient response to members’
questions in relation to this subject, which is one of the
areas that the Home Builders Federation is targeting. The
expert on this subject was our speaker, John Slaughter, who
was informative, knowledgeable and patient, and responded to
the many and detailed questions asked. A separate full

Housing as ‘A
Safe Roof’, which is the underlying theme of the Housing
Committee meetings, is vital to women of all ages and races,
all of whom have a need to enjoy stability, or ‘stay-put-ness.
